DE KERGOMMEAUX, DuncanCanadian, born 1927

Duncan de Kergommeaux, Professor Emeritus, RCA, is a first generation Canadian of Breton descent born in northern BC in 1927. His career as an artist has spanned more than six decades beginning in 1951 at the Banff School of Fine Arts and in Victoria BC under the Czech artist Jan Zach. In 1953 he moved to Ottawa where in 1955 he had his first solo exhibition.

Summer studies at the Hans Hofmann School of Art in Provincetown strongly informed his teaching at the Ottawa Community Art Centre (now the Ottawa School of Art) and Carleton University where he acted for several years as art advisor and extension lecturer.

During the 60’s, while maintaining a full time studio practice, he directed the Blue Barn Gallery in Bell’s Corners and later Lofthouse Galleries in Ottawa both dedicated to introducing contemporary art to the Ottawa public through an outreach program of exhibitions at Carleton University, Ottawa University and St. Patrick’s College During Expo67 in Montreal he was Director of the Canadian Pavilion Art Gallery.

The 70’s through 2000 he spent in London Ontario as professor and head of studio art at The University of Western Ontario. In 2000 he retired back to the Ottawa area.

He has taught summer courses at the Banff Centre, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the University of Victoria.

Since 1953 he has had over 50 solo exhibitions one (two- person) circulated by the National Gallery of Canada. His work, which has been included in many national group exhibitions including the Third and Sixth Biennials of Canadian Art is included in private, corporate and public collections in Canada and abroad; including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Major holdings are in the Ottawa Art Gallery, Carleton University Art Gallery, the London Regional Art Gallery and McIntosh Gallery at Western University.

Two major surveys with catalogues and critical essays were organized by the London Regional Gallery: “An Art of Ordered Sensations” curated by Mathew Teitlebaum, 1986 and “Process Structure Meaning” curated by José L. Bario—Garay, 1995. A retrospective exhibition “ These are the Marks I Make” ( with catalogue containing critical essays by Bernard Bonario, Emily Falvey and Andrea Fatona) was curated by Andrea Fatona of the Ottawa Art Gallery for exhibition there in 2010 and and at Museum London in 2011.

Duncan de Kergommeaux is represented in Ottawa by Wallack Galleries and in London Ontario by Thielsen Galleries.
