BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Ron Kostyniuk

1941 - Born Wakaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.

1963 - Awarded Bachelor of Arts (Biology) and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

- Commenced exploration of the Constructed Relief as a means of art expression.

1963/8 - Biology instructor in senior high schools in Brandon, Manitoba and Edmonton, Alberta.

1965 - Visited Charles Biederman's studio in Red Wing, Minnesota.

1967/8 - Enrolled in an art program at the University of Alberta

- Prize awarded for the submission of ‘Relief 1968’ to the Winnipeg Biennial Exhibition, Winnipeg Art Gallery (juried by Jan van der Marck).

- Art work included in the exhibition Seventh Biennial of Canadian Art at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (juried by William Seitz).

1969 - Art work included in the international exhibition Relief/Construction/Relief

organized by Jan van der Marck for the Museum of Contemporary Art in

Chicago which also traveled to the Herron Museum in Indianapolis, the

Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills and the High Museum in Atlanta.

- Awarded a Canada Council Arts Bursary in support of research into the ‘constructed relief’ idiom and enrolled in the Graduate Program at the University of Wisconsin, U.S.A.

1970 - Awarded a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin.

- Staged a solo exhibition of ‘Relief Structures’ at the Edmonton Art Gallery, Edmonton, Alberta. The exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk accompanied the exhibition.

- Many visits to the Art Institute of Chicago to study art during the 1969-1971 period.

1971 - Awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin.

- Appointed to the teaching faculty, Department of Art at the University of Calgary.

- Exhibition of ‘Relief Structures’ staged by the Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan . The exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk accompanied the exhibition.

1972 - Exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk - Relief Structures 1969-1972 published to accompany an exhibition of twenty relief structures staged at the Glenbow Museum, Calgary; York University, Toronto; Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton and Memorial University Art Gallery, St. John’s.

1973 - Exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk - Structured Reliefs 1973 published to accompany an exhibition of relief structures staged at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Chicago, Illinois.

- Traveled through Western Europe, Italy, Scandinavian Countries, England visiting major art museums (first of many trips to Europe).

1974 - Exhibition of relief structures staged at the Sarnia Art Gallery, Sarnia, Ontario, University of Moncton, Moncton, New Brunswick and Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

1975 - Elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art.

1977 - Exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk - Relief Structures 1972-1977 published to accompany an exhibition of twenty relief structures at the University of Calgary Art Gallery, Calgary, Alberta.

1977-8 - Sabbatical year spent traveling through the United States, Europe and Russia.

- Appointed External Affairs Foreign Exchange Scholar (Canada-USSR).

1978 - Appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Art, University of Calgary.

- Awarded a Killam Resident Fellowship at the University of Calgary to complete work on the monograph The Evolution of the Constructed Relief 1913-1979.

1979 - Published The Evolution of the Constructed Relief 1913-1979 and organized an exhibition of constructed reliefs by international artists to travel across Canada. (Exhibition included works by Domela, Gorin, Biederman, Hill, Martin, Bornstein, Barr and others).

1980 - Awarded a Canada Council grant in support of travel to Germany to research relief construction representation in Europe (visited Hartmut Bohm).

1981 - Commissioned to create a relief mural in 5 parts (Crystalline Series) for the executive offices of Paul Albrectsen Limited, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

- Initiated the ‘Wave’ relief structure series incorporating curvilinear shapes for the first time.

1982 - Awarded a British Council Grant to research relief construction in Britain.

- Visited studios of artists Kenneth Martin, Anthony Hill, Gillian Wise, Terry

Pope, John Ernest, Peter Lowe, Malcolm Hughes, Jean Spencer and others working in the constructed relief idiom.

1983 - Exhibition catalogue Ron Kostyniuk - Art and Sources 1963-1983 published to accompany an exhibition at the Nickle Arts Museum, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta.

1984 - Appointed Full Professor in the Department of Art, University of Calgary.

- Involved with the Banff Center ‘Artist In Residence In Schools’ program creating a large mural with students at F.E. Osborne school , Calgary, Alberta.

- Traveled to South Seas to research coral reef structures in preparation for the ‘Encrustation’ relief structure series.

1985 - Created Relief Structure ‘Night Sky – Nebula’ triptych for L. Silverman, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

1986 - Traveled to France to research the work of Cesar Domela and Jean Gorin, pioneers of the ‘Geometric Constructed Relief’ and visited these artists.

- Traveled to England and France to visit artists' studios as well as to photograph drawings of Cro-Magnon man in the caves of Lascaux and the Dordogne region of France.

1987 - Visited Biederman's studio for the second time.

1988 - Traveled to California to research the work of artists working in a geometric 3D relief fashion and visited artist Charles Hess in Oakland.

- Awarded a commission from Amoco Canada to create a relief structure for the lobby of Amoco Canada Ltd., Calgary.

- Awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Grant to research and document the work of Polish Constructive artists.

- Traveled to Warsaw, Lodz, Cracow, Wroclaw to interview artists working in the Constructive Art direction.

1989 - Invited to stage an exhibition of relief structures at an art conference in Nurenburg, West Germany and presented a paper on ‘Neo-Constructions’.

- Commissioned by Olympia and York Developments to create a sculpture ‘Memories’ (7.5 x 17 x 2 ft.) for the lobby of a building in Calgary.

- Traveled to Warsaw, Poland and St. Petersburg, Russia.

- Visited Cesar Domela for a second time in Paris.

1990 - Organized an exhibition of Polish Constructive Art and published Constructive Art In Poland 1924-1991 to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Nickle Art Museum, University of Calgary.

- Received approval for a sculpture commission from the Department of External Affairs, Government of Canada to produce a sculpture in three parts for the Canadian Embassy Building in Algiers, Algeria. (not realized)

1991 - Traveled to Spain and Portugal to research the work of Constructive artists and traveled to Madrid, Toledo and Lisbon to interview artists working in the Constructive Art idiom.

- Awarded a commission to produce a sculpture ‘Spectators’ (8 x 22ft.) for the entrance lobby of the Clareview Recreation Complex, Edmonton, Alberta.

- Exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk - Neo-Constructions 1983-1991 published to accompany an exhibition of Neo-Constructions at the Muttart Art Gallery, Calgary, Alberta.

1994 - Exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk - An Anthropomorphic Architecture 1991-1993 published to accompany an exhibition at the Art Department Gallery, University of Calgary.

1995 - Presented a paper at an international conference on ‘Symmetry’ in Alexandria, Virginia and exhibited 12 relief structures.

- Visited by Jan van der Marck.

- Art work reproduced on the label and cover of music UNICAL compact disc and tape, University of Calgary.

1996 - Established the ‘Foundation for Constructive Art’ at the University of Calgary.

1998 - Organized the project ‘A Celebration of Constructive Art’ – exhibition and lecture series presented at the Nickle Arts Museum, University of Calgary.

- Visited by Jan van der Marck.

1999 - Awarded a University of Calgary research grant to research and document the work of artist David Barr.

2001 - Exhibition catalogue Kostyniuk - The Saskatchewan Road Map published to accompany an exhibition of the same name.

2002 - Traveled to France to research the work of a large number of French artists working in the Constructive Art idiom.

2003 - Participated with an exhibition of artwork as well as a lecture at an international symposium on Constructive Art in Budapest, Hungary (Millenarium Center).

2004 - Participated in an exhibition of International Constructive Art at the Galerie Konkrete in Sulzberg, Germany and traveled to Sulzberg to participate in this event.

2009 - Participated with an exhibition of 19 sculptures at the Liu Haisu Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, China.

- Traveled to Shanghai and Bejing to view contemporary Chinese art as well as to

Xian to view the terra cotta warriors sculptures.

2011 - Staged a solo exhibition of 28 sculptures at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern

Art, Chicago, Illinois.

2012 - Staged an exhibition of Constructions/Neo-Constructions at the Ukrainian

Museum in New York.

2013 - Staged a solo exhibition of sculptures at the Ukrainian Institute of America in

New York.
