Don Jean-Louis was born in Hull, Quebec in 1937.

A largely self-taught artist, he has been exhibiting in Canada and internationally since 1960, with his first solo show at The Isaacs Gallery, Toronto, in 1961. In 1978 he was named to the Royal Canadian Academy.

Don Jean-Louis is represented in many public art collections in Canada, including the National Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Museum at the University of Toronto; the MacLaren Art Centre, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen's University, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Musée d'art contemporain in Montreal, as well as in many private collections.

Recent exhibitions include a touring exhibition (2006 – 2009), Don Jean-Louis Silver Works, co-organized by The Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria), and participation in a three-person exhibition at the Douglas Udell Gallery, Vancouver (2001) as well as participation in a group exhibition at the University of Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane, Australia.

Don Jean-Louis has been based on Vancouver Island since 1996.
