HASSAN, Jamelie

BiographyJamelie Hassan, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), Western University, is a visual artist, independent curator, activist, lecturer and writer based in London, Ont. Since the 1970s, she has exhibited widely in Canada and internationally. In 1993, she received the “Canada 125” Medal for outstanding community service. She was awarded the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2001 in recognition of her artistic achievements. She received an honorary doctorate in visual arts from OCAD University, Toronto in 2018. She is one of the founders of two artist-run centres in London, Ontario, the Forest City Gallery and the Embassy Cultural House.
